Overview
This hike takes off right from central Ubud and winds its way into the rice fields just north of town. Beautiful rural scenery and pleasant walking make this outing seem worlds away from the commotion of nearby Ubud. This walk is deservedly well-publicized by many travel guides to the area, but still makes for a fun morning adventure in Ubud.
Need to Know
Stop for delicious drinks or lunch in the shade at Sari Organik or one of the many other cute eateries along the path.
Description
The start point for this route is an easy stroll from central Ubud, beginning at the western end of Jl Raya Ubud. Look for signs pointing to the Ricefield Walk and Sari Organik Cafe on the north side of the road just before the overhead aqueduct and downhill grade (near the Abangan Bungalows) as Jl Raya Ubud heads down to Campuhan.
The first few hundred meters of the route weave toward the north and west through a neighborhood, with signs guiding the way at potentially confusing intersections. Shortly, the path turns toward the north and emerges at the edge of a spectacular series of terraced ricefields. The narrow path, which is mostly paved, winds its way among rice paddies, past houses, shrines, and even several cafes and galleries. You'll share the path with occasional scooters, but it is far too narrow to worry about cars or traffic. As the route heads north it takes on a more rural character, and views toward the volcanoes can be spectacular on a clear day. The path is lacking in shade for long stretches, so be sure to take water. Also, several nice cafes offer seating with knockout ricefield views, and good food and drinks are available.
The path north from Ubud ends at a paved road after approximately 2 miles. Here you may be able to find transport if you want a ride back to town. Alternatively, it is an easy downhill walk to make this an out-and-back. Some guidebooks recommend a more adventurous return route through the ricefields to the east, but take note that a new major housing development about midway back toward Ubud makes this option a bit challenging.
