Overview

Joe Wheeler Resort State Park's most popular hiking trail is located between the Wheeler Dam Village and the Fisherman's Resort Lodge. A scenic loop that is just over two miles long, this trail is well-maintained and has scenic views of the river for most of its length.

Need to Know

The trailhead is accessed from AL Hwy. 101 near Wheeler Dam and the cabin area.

Description

This is a good trail for families, beginner hikers, or those just looking for a mellow hike with some pleasant scenery. It is a 2.1-mile loop on a very wide trail. There are no technical sections at all.

Along the way, to top off this great trail, there are overlooks of the Tennessee River for almost the entire trail. The trail has some very mile ups and downs as it winds through the woods, but nothing strenuous, and all-in-all, you can enjoy an easy hike.

History & Background

There are several historic ruins along the path - look for the still standing chimney, stone wall, and 1930s era bath house in the woods alongside the path.
