Overview
An easy loop that takes in dramatic cliffs and sea arches with expansive views of some of the prettiest coastline on the Otago Peninsula.
Description
From the carpark, follow the path through a shady macrocarpa avenue to open paddocks beyond. The easy path takes in wide open coastal views as it heads to a spur trail to a worthwhile lookout over The Chasm - dramatic cliffs that have been eroded by the sea below. Head back to the main trail and continue on for views of Lovers Leap, a sea arch with the ocean crashing underneath. The volcanic cliffs that surround Lovers Leap form a popular area for rock climbers, who may be seen below, so definitely don't throw anything over the edge.
The track continues around the headland, dipping briefly into native bush and then passing a connector trail that leads to the
Sandfly Bay from Sandymount track. The route then climbs to the summit of Sandymount. From the top of this promontory, fine views of the dramatic Otago Peninsula coast extend in all directions. A short walk from Sandymount leads down to the carpark.
