Great for families, whether on the full loop or a shorter distance out and back
Overview
This loop begins/ends at the
Saguaro Trail, which starts at the
Gateway Trail, off of Thompson Peak Parkway. This hike makes an easy introduction to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. This park is awesome--sustainable in every aspect, and a wonderful display of the natural environment in the Phoenix Valley.
Need to Know
The
Gateway Trail is only open from sunrise to sunset. It has tons of parking, but can still fill up on busy winter days. Water and flushing toilets are available.
Description
Starting at the
Gateway Trail, go east on the
Saguaro Trail to the junction of the
Gateway Trail. It is recommended (but not necessary) to travel this route clockwise, so turn left at the first junction. Go right at the junction with the Windgate Pass trail. Follow the Gateway Loop trail over the Gateway Saddle viewpoint. This is a great spot to rest and hydrate before continuing on.
Continue to the junction with the Bell Pass trail. Turn right and stay on the Gateway Loop trail all the way back to the Saguaro trail junction, bearing right at a number of trail junctions. Turn left at the Saguaro trail and head back to the parking area.
