Description
The Intemann Trail has finally been completed by going through the newly formed Iron Mountain Open Space. This means there is finally a connection between the Manitou Springs trails and the trail in western Colorado Springs.
From the Palmer/Section 16 trailhead in Colorado Springs, head west until you reach the Intemann Trail in about 1 mile, which will head off to the right. Follow this trail through grasslands before entering rolling forests.
Continue to follow the trail and you'll eventually drop down to Crystal Park road where there is a beautiful stream providing a peaceful place to take a break and enjoy the sound of running water.
Cross Crystal Park Road and the trail picks up on the other side and climbs steeply. It eventually levels out and connects with an old dirt road that will traverse around Iron Mountain before returning to a simple trail that winds its way behind (south of) Manitou Springs.
This trail allows one to hike from all of the trails on the west side of Colorado Springs (Red Rock Canyon, Bear Creek, Section 16) to the trails in Manitou (
Barr Trail, Iron Mountain, the Incline, etc...) allowing for a number of mileage and loop options that could keep one occupied for a lifetime.
