Due to the road washout, access to the start of this trail now requires hiking or biking from
Madison Falls trailhead to Whiskey Bend trailhead plus the hike along the
Elwha River Trail.
Description
Tucked away in the higher hills along the Elwha River, the Lillian River Trail is a perfect getaway for those looking for another adventure out of the Whiskey Bend Trailhead. The trail splits after 4.3 miles along the
Elwha River Trail, darting into the Olympic interior and the valley below
Hurricane Ridge.
While views aren't as sweeping as neighboring trails, getting into the wilderness of Olympic is something everyone should try. The Lillian River Trail is simple, easy to follow and most of the elevation is gained at the start. While you'll have a few dips and rises along the path, it is gentle enough to tackle with limited exertion.
At the end of the trail, you reach a backcountry campsite that is set along the Lillian River, giving a perfect place for a picnic, short rest or quiet moment of reflection while sitting along a unique and gorgeous river in Olympic National Park. While this trail doesn't offer magnificent views, it does give you a fantastic route into one of the lesser seen regions of the park.
Flora & Fauna
Great trail for ferns, moss, and fir trees. It is also quite common to see deer on or near the trail. In the spring, the trail can become quite overgrown with Salal.
