Description
The navigation on this hillside behind the lodging lining Deer Valley Drive East can be confusing at first, mostly due to multiple junctions, similar trail names, and signposts that label trails in addition to giving directions to neighboring trails.
The Gap Trail switchbacks up the dry exposed hillside from
Finn's trail, making several close approaches to the St. Regis funicular. Pass upwards through scrub oak and thistle towards the hulking St Regis Hotel. Attain the ridge and delight in the wide-lens views of the Jordanelle Reservoir and Deer Crest neighborhood. Proceed along the ridgetop and drop down over the summit into the dry valley below.
A signpost at a level section of trail gives the option of going directly back to the
Mid Gap trail (via the
Gap Connector) in the direction of the McKinley Road guardhouse or heading downhill towards the St. Regis Hotel. The Gap Trail towards the St. Regis descends first through more dry, shrubby undergrowth before turning sharply away from the St Regis to follow along the top of a roadway retaining wall. The Gap trail ends just uphill of the McKinley Road guardhouse. Note: bikes are allowed on this trail.
