At this point, the trail follows a gravel service road that moves through the ponderosa pine forest.
The trail narrows and climbs up the hillside toward the Roof Trail and the visitor center.
The view from the platform overlooking the Black Hills National Forest. You can see the ponderosa pine forest that makes up a great deal of Jewel Cave National Monument.
Benches can be found along the trail that allow you to enjoy the views and take in the peace of the forest.

The Canyons Trail meanders through the Jasper Fire burn scar from the year 2000. It gives you a sense of how the landscape can recover from fire.
Views of the surrounding hills and mountains spread out before you. The views in this part of the trail are the most sweeping in the monument.
The trail breaks off from the Roof trail and climbs gently up the hillside.
