Side trail to Varnum's woods picnic area can also be used to loop around the stream depression and switchbacks.
The switchbacks through this depression are often muddy and poor. They are passable, but can also be avoided with a small detour.
Turning away from the river provides an easier pass around the upcoming stream valley.
