Description
Permits can be obtained here: navajonationparks.org/permits/backcountry-hiking-camping/
Gradually descend into Cha Canyon following cairns for 3.5 miles to Bald Rock Canyon while working down switchbacks to the base of the canyon. Hike northwest through Surprise Valley along sections of slick rock and chipped out rock steps. At 6.5 miles arrive at Owl Bridge and meander uphill via switchbacks towards the ridge.
Owl Bridge is easy to miss. Look up high and to the left. In 2 more miles Oak Canyon has a good reliable water source for refilling than work uphill to climb out of the canyon where you'll finally arrive at Bridge Canyon at mile 12. You'll cross the creek several times. Serpiginous in nature it is very beautiful down in Bridge Canyon and after a large green vegetated slope you are only 1.5 miles from Rainbow Bridge that is much larger than expected.
This out and back trail is not technical but it does cross several passes over slick sandy rock. The best months to attempt the trek would be in spring or fall for cooler temps and reliable water resources. The best backpacking spot is Owl Bridge.
Dogs are allowed.
A high clearance car is recommended to get to the TH for the last 4.5 miles over dry washes and rocky sections.
Overnight Trip: Only accessible via boat on Lake Powell or obtain a permit from the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department and backpack on Navajo Tribal Lands via the Rainbow Bridge trailhead.
Gem Type: Natural Arch
