The Notch Viewpoint [Suggest Edits]

You don't want to miss these fantastic views! Though this might be a bit of a challenge to get to, you'll not be disappointed when you are rewarded with views in both directions of McKittrick Canyon. Though lengthy, there are several other interesting spots to stop along the hike to The Notch including Pratt Cabin and The Grotto.

Once you reach The Notch, spend some time soaking in the views and enjoying a well-deserved break. From here you can either continue further along to the McKittrick Canyon backcountry campground or head back down to the trailhead.

All-Day Hike: The trailhead is located in a day-use area. Check the park website for times.

Reaching The Notch requires a long and strenuous hike. You'll start the hike from the McKittrick Canyon Visitor Center and head west along McKittrick Canyon Trail. Follow the directions for The Notch Out-and-Back hike to find your way. There are some great alternative turnaround points for those who decide they can't make it all the way to The Notch.

Be aware that, although the first four miles ascend a somewhat gentle grade, the going gets rough beyond mile four, and you're in for some scrambling, steep grades, and loose footing the rest of the way to The Notch.
