Fort Pickens [Suggest Edits]
Description
Fort Pickens is an interesting Civil War era brick and mortar fortification with installments up until WWII. The fort is run by the National Park Service as part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and is also the northern terminus for the Florida National Scenic Trail. For more information, visit the NPS website.
On the Road: The parking lot is about one hundred yards away from the sally port (entrance to the fort). Other installments are no more then half a mile from designated parking locations.
Family Friendly: A good learning opportunity, and the rangers provide multiple programs and junior ranger opportunities.
Gem Type: Historic Site
