Description

Moraine Lake in the Valley of Ten Peaks is a classic Canadian scene. Among other places, it was on the Canadian $20 bill about 40 years ago.

Moraine Lake has the iridescent turquoise waters typical of glacier-fed lakes, due to the glacial silt suspended in the water. It is nestled in the Valley of Ten Peaks, ten rugged mountains that surround Moraine Lake.

Moraine Lake is a great place to just sit and take in the view, or enjoy it while strolling around. Several awesome trails also start at Moraine Lake. One of the most spectacular and difficult trails, climbs to Sentinel Pass that offers views into the valley on the other side, glaciers, and snow fields.

The trail to Larch Valley is less strenuous and arrives at the beautiful Larch Valley. Trails also go to Eiffel Lake and Wenkchemna Pass. It is also possible to hike to Lake Louise from Moraine Lake.

On the Road: Moraine Lake is at the end of Moraine Lake Road, a side road from the Icefields Parkway (Trans Canada 1 between Jasper and Banff), just south of Lake Louise. From the Icefields Parkway, take the Lake Lousie turnoff towards Lake Louise, and then go left onto Moraine Lake Road. Park in the parking areas at the end of Moraine Lake Road, and it is a short hike to beautiful Moraine Lake and facilities - lodge, food, etc. Several trails also start at Moraine Lake.
