Matterhorn Mill [Suggest Edits]

Description

The Matterhorn Mill, officially known as the Valley View Leasing and Mining Company Mill, is located near Ophir and is right off Highway 145. The mill is hidden from the roadway, and parking isn't obvious, so you'll need to keep an eye open to make sure you don't miss the mill!

Once you've found it, spend some time exploring. The Matterhorn was once a state-of-the-art flotation mill, built in 1920 and later renovated in 1961. It was used for another seven years until operations ceased.

The structure is 146 ft by 46 ft and an impressive 96 ft tall. The building is stable but still use caution when exploring around the area, and don't try to enter inside.

Today the well-preserved mill finds itself on the National Register of Historic Places for its local significance and contribution to 20th century silver mining.

There are also some stunning views of the San Juan Mountains from the mill.
