Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant [Suggest Edits]
Description
Ames Station is a historic hydroelectric power plant that was the first in the world to produce and transmit alternating current. The plant was constructed in 1890 and became operational the following year.
There was controversy amongst engineers and scientists at the time that alternating current could never work, but there was also a need to replace scarce wood as a fuel and supply power to nearby gold mines. The doubters were proved wrong when, in 1891, electricity was produced and transmitted 2.6 miles over rugged terrain to the motor-driven mill at Gold King Mine.
Today the power plant can be visited via a short drive off Highway 145 near Ophir. Turn onto the gravel road 63L, then watch for a sharp left turn onto Ames Road which will take you to the plant. Ames Station is still in use today, but visitors can view the outside and an informative plaque.
On the Road: Parking available at power plant. No hike in required.
