Description

No matter how you approach Wasson Peak, you won't be disappointed by the journey. The hike from any of Saguaro's parking areas to the summit has you passing through some of the characteristic terrain for which the park is famous. You'll pass saguaro, cholla, and prickly pear cactus, and the rocky trail surface will make you feel at one with your desert surroundings.

Take your time on the journey, as there are some spectacular views that you won't want to miss. By the time that you reach the Wasson Peak Trail, views of the Tucson valley and the Tucson Mountains will start to reveal themselves. These views only get more dramatic as you continue to gain elevation.

From the bald and rocky summit, you'll have reached the highest point in the Tucson Mountain District of the park (4,687'). Drink some well-earned water and soak in the views of the Tucson and Santa Catalina Mountains, both of which are visible from the top.

Once you've had your fill of the views, return the way that you came, or continue on your adventures by following another of the excellent trails in the area.

Half-Day Hike: This trail can be accessed by a variety of trails, but you're going to have to negotiate at least three miles to reach the summit.

Family Friendly: While the route may be a bit strenuous for younger kids, older kids will enjoy getting a new perspective on Tucson from the summit.
