Peirce Mill [Suggest Edits]
Description
The Peirce Mill used water from Rock Creek to power the grinding of corn, wheat, and rye from 1829-1897. This site also became a sawmill, orchard, tree nursery, and tea house. Before the Civil War, slaves were used to run the commercial operations. The interesting history here and good restoration work done by the park service makes this a worthwhile stop. Milling demonstrations and ranger-led discussions about the technology, rural life, water resources and slaver are also available.
Difficulty: On the Road
Family Friendly: Free ranger programs are offered to explain how the gristmill worked. Kids even get to try their hand at grinding corn! Easy access and on-site parking.
