Description

The remains of three lime kilns are found on the hill above Valley Creek near the Knox Farm. An unnamed footpath leads to this area from the bridge on Wilson Rd. This area can also be reached by following an unnamed horse trail from the Knox Farm North along Valley Creek.

These kilns attest to the agricultural influence of the area before and after the Revolutionary War. Most likely these three kilns were constructed after the winter encampment. The kilns were used with limestone from local quarries. Burnt lime was likely used to improve field productions. It may also have been used in construction.

The John Brown Kiln dates between the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. The Kiln sits on land that Samuel Brown owned immediately before the Winter Encampment. The two smaller kilns are older and likely from 1775-1800. These are the First and Second Auxiliary Kiln. The large prominent stone stack represents John Brown's Kiln, constructed 1800-1825.

John Brown's kiln is unprotected and deteriorating. It has been subjected to weather and vandalism.

Short Hike: Small gravel parking lot closeby, two larger paved parking areas not far away
