Overview

The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1937 as a "refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife". The Okefenokee is like no other place on earth, where natural beauty and wilderness prevail.

The vision for Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is to protect and enhance wildlife and its habitat, ensure integrity of the ecological system, and embrace the grandeur, mystery, and cultural heritage that lead to an enrichment of the human spirit.

Visiting Tips

The Suwannee Canal Recreation Area (East Entrance) Visitor Center offers a variety of programs to the public. Come out and celebrate nature at the refuge on special event days such as Earth Day (April) or International Migratory Bird Day (May). National Wildlife Refuge System week is in October - a great time to visit your local National Wildlife Refuge.

Camping & Lodging

There are seven overnight shelters and three islands available in the swamp's interior (see map).

Other Activities

Okefenokee NWR is renown for its amazing paddling opportunities. Be sure to check out a guided tour provided by Okefenokee Adventures.

Additionally, the area provides great habitat for hunting. To learn more about the hunting on offer at Okefenokee NWR, check out their hunting page.
