Jefferson Barracks Park

Overview

In 1950, the Federal Government conveyed a tract of land to St. Louis County to operate as a historical park. In 1971, Jefferson Barracks County Park, the adjacent active military base, and several other adjoining land parcels were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Visitors to the park can enjoy the historical buildings and a museum in addition to scenic views of the Mississippi River. Additionally, the park is home to WWII and Civil War re-enactments every year. The fencing around the Scenic Overlook was constructed out of Civil War gun barrels.

Jefferson Barracks Park is part of the south county karst plateau, and numerous sinkholes are found throughout the park. Some of the sinkholes have been filled, and the remaining sinkholes often retain water which creates a natural wetland, adding to the diversity of the plants and animals found in the park.
