Description
To find the Spring Run Boardwalk, from the parking area at the end of the park road, walk across the big field. Stay towards the west side of the field, at the end of the park road to begin at the start of the Spring Run Boardwalk.
This sturdy boardwalk is a popular place and quite wide. Turn right when you reach the boardwalk to walk its length. Close by to the left (northwest), is Blue Spring Run, a pretty aquamarine creek with perfectly clear water. Several viewing platforms that overlook Blue Spring Run, are on the left side of the boardwalk.
From the viewing platforms, many species of fish can be seen in the clear waters. However the "stars of the show" are the manatees. These huge, slow moving mammals congregate here in the colder months to enjoy the warmer spring waters. This is one of the largest gathering spots for the manatees in Florida.
After about a tenth of a mile, currently (February 2025) a construction project blocks the way. When completed, this hike should continue for about 0.4 miles total, all along Blue Spring Run.
Flora & Fauna
Manatees, the gentle giants, congregate here in Blue Spring Run. Many fish species, some very large, keep them company. Typical Florida birds roost in the trees and on logs. The beautiful surrounding forest is dense with Florida hardwoods and other vegetation.
