Overview

The Broadside Trail to Lower Sunset loop offers a moderately challenging hike through diverse terrain.

Description

Starting on Broadside Trail, you'll ascend steadily through a beautiful ponderosa pine forest, gradually gaining elevation as you make your way up the mountain.
Once you reach the higher point on Broadside, you'll descend on Lower Sunset Trail, which takes you through a shady, north-facing drainage. This section is particularly notable for its old-growth fir trees, their tall trunks towering above as you pass beneath their dense canopy. The cool, shaded environment is home to a variety of ferns and lush undergrowth, creating a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere. Although mostly smooth there are a few steep rooty sections on Lower Sunset trail.
Along the way, make a quick stop by Schultz Tank, where you can enjoy views of the San Fransico Peaks behind the Lake. This area is popular with birds, so you might catch sight of some local wildlife while taking in the scenery.
