The boardwalk is close to the parking lot, so this makes it a great place to take the kids and get them out of the car to burn some energy when driving the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Description
The Cypress Swamp Nature trail is accessed at Milepost 122 on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The trail descends stairs on the left hand side of the parking area and crosses the swamp over a boardwalk where great views of the Cypress Trees and Tupelo trees can be enjoyed. Birds can be seen through the surrounding forests, and animals common in swamps may be seen. On a sunny day, you may even get a view of alligators sunning themselves in the waters or on logs in the swamp.
Once you cross the boardwalk, the trail becomes a narrow singletrack dirt trail that goes around the perimeter of the swamp. Signage along the way explains what is going on in the environment around you. Great views of the cypress trees can be enjoyed along the path. The trail circles the swamp and climbs up a small hill to arrive back at the other end of the parking lot where you can continue exploring the Natchez Trace Parkway.
