Description

The Pioneer Trail was constructed by 37 volunteers working 2000+ hours over 18 months - using only hand tools and chainsaws. It officially opened in May 2023 and is a gorgeous trail that is a joy to hike. Lots of rolling hills, cool rock formations, and a creek you'll cross a few times (beautiful rock steps so you won't get your feet wet).

The trail is on the site of the old Pioneer Camp that was active from the 1930s-1950s and served the youth of Alamance County. The chimney you pass by was from the old dining hall. Alamance Parks has put in a couple of picnic tables there. This wonderful trail is a great example of what volunteers can accomplish in partnership with Alamance County.

Flora & Fauna

There are many species of oaks and other hardwoods, ferns, numerous mushrooms, and wildlife typical of the area (turtles, salamanders, deer, squirrels, butterflies, birds, etc.). You can usually hear Pileated Woodpeckers and Summer Tanagers and sometimes catch a glimpse if you are lucky. Even saw a River Otter in the pond on one occasion.
