Description
The trail starts out at the Pima Dynamite trailhead, just off of Pima Rd. in Cave Creek, AZ. The trailhead has very nice and modern facilities, with plenty of parking, flush toilets, potable water, and maps. Trails are all multiuse, so expect to encounter mountain bikers and even horse riders while hiking. No dogs allowed.
The Axel Grease Trail is an out-and-back trail, with a total length of 4.2 miles. Elevation is from 2310 to 2563 ft., with no steep climbs. The trail is singletrack, with well packed dirt and sandy areas. It intersects with other trails along the route, and could be made into a loop by connecting to other trails.
The trail is very well marked. You don't need to travel far from the trailhead to start experiencing the desert landscape. There are many tall saguaros, cholla, and other cacti and desert trees along the trail, and the McDowell and
Black Mountain are visible, also. A beautiful introduction to the Sonoran desert landscape.
