The Lakes of Eldridge housing subdivision at the north end is a private gated community, and if you're not a resident, you won't be able to enter and park there for access from the north end. Parking is therefore on the south end on Clay Road. There is not great parking here - just pull off the shoulder as far as you can so you don't impede traffic, and don't block the gates which provide access to the drainage for maintenance and emergency vehicles.

Need to Know

No restroom facilities. Bring your own fluids.

Description

This trail runs on both sides of a drainage ditch built as part of the Addicks Reservoir, an extension of Turkey Creek which used to have its source just north of Clay Road. The ditch hurries-up the water drainage from the north down into the reservoir, and was dug in the 1940's. The top of the banks are flat and grassy, and the grass is kept cut by tractors. It's popular for walking, dog-walking & jogging by residents of the houses to the north. Heavy woods are on both sides.

The distance one-way is three-quarters of a mile. Double-back for 1.5 miles. You can add a little extra by hiking the trails around the subdivision lakes. Hike up one side, cross over on the bridge at the north end, and come back on the other side.

Flora & Fauna

You can see both woodland and water birds in this area. The subdivision lakes have ducks. There are broad-banded water snakes. Deer live in the woods, and you might see tufts of fur on the barbed wire fences where they leap over the fencing, and their bellies drag on the top wire barbs, pulling out hairs.
