Description

From the parking lot on Park Road 66, hike most of Clapper Rail Trail to get to Heron's Walk Trail. After passing the giant ibis statue and crossing the boardwalk, you'll have the option of turning left, continuing straight, or turning left. Take the left to begin the Heron's Walk Trail.

You'll be able to see the final destination of the observation tower immediately, so just continue hiking straight for 0.3 miles until you're there. Occasionally the trail will be under water or very muddy, but there's usually either a path around it or you can cut over to the adjacent Egret Loop Trail. The observation tower provides the best view in the park, so take in the sights while you're there. Retrace your steps to return to Clapper Rail Trail.

Note: The trail looks like it continues another half mile or so beyond the observation tower, but you likely won't be able to continue unless you're willing to trek/wade through some thick mud and water.

Flora & Fauna

Coastal birds (egrets, herons, ibis, etc.) and crabs.
