Overview

This route to Green Lake and on to East Lake is a spectacular fall hike with one of the regions largest Aspen groves. The trail climbs through the grove in several locations and features multiple vista view areas. Once at Green Lake the mountain range is dramatic and the lakes are great for photography, fishing, and a cold dip.

Need to Know

From Bridgeport, drive south for about 8 miles and take the Green Creek Rd. exit. Follow the dirt road and signs to the Green Creek Trail-head. This area is popular dirt bike riding region. Dispersed camping locate din canyon. Backpacker Permits are issued at the Bridgeport office in Bridgeport.

Description

This wooded trail climbs up Green Lake canyon through one of the most colorful Aspen groves in the fall found in the Eastern Sierra. Climbing past the grove hikers and backers discover a series of lakes perfect for camping or fishing.

Green Creek Trail, in the Toiyabe National Forest, is a relatively short and beautiful hike to Green Lake and further on to East Lake. Both lakes are large and surrounded by dramatic peaks. The moderate hike to East Lake is about 8 miles round trip and gains about 1,400 feet in elevation. The trail is a mix of decomposed granite and dirt trail with a combination of granite steps, small creek crossings.

Many backpackers continue on past East lake into Summit Lake at the border of Yosemite National Park and then down into Virginia Lake Canyon as a loop trip.
