Dogs Leashed

This area is occasionally used for a restricted deer hunt within Longview Park. The trailhead starts at the group camping area. When the group camp is closed,, you must park just off Scherer Parkway (without blocking the gate), and walk up the access road too.

Need to Know

Make note of any signs at the entrance alerting to brief deer hunting periods.

Description

The nature trail starts just beyond the parking for the Organized Youth Campground. The trail start is marked with a "This trail is maintain by" sign. There is also a gravel vehicle track down to the pond to the west of the trail behind a gate, but this is not a scenic a hike. The first connector is somewhat washed out, with roots exposed, and can be a bit muddy.

The trail uses a small length of power line cut, but then dives back into the woods. It T's and runs east, back to the powerline, which you follow south. The trail then cuts back into the woods with a well marked entry, but then the trail become nearly invisible, and before it connects again with the N-S leg. You can cross the rock flat of the creek and pickup a small spur which leads to a clearing, but then return back.

Heading North takes you to the pond, crossing along the dam. The trail disappears again, where erosion has cut a ravine, but picks up again to connect with the entry path.

Flora & Fauna

There are frequently deer along the trail, and many deer runs crisscrossing the trail.
