Overview

This route offers the opportunity to see some of the highlights of the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area. If doing this as a multi-day trip good camping options at glacier lake, blue lake, and ice lake are all nice stops along the way. With a number of climbs, you are rewarded with great views and the opportunity to see the lakes basin area from a number of angles.

Description

Route takes you up the West Fork Wallowa River Trail #1820 to the intersection at Frazier Lake and the Glacier Lake Trail #1806. From Glacier Lake Trail #1806 to trail 1810a you then make left turn onto Eagle Trail #1910 to the Eagle Cap Summit Trail #1805. After the out and back up to the summit, return to East Eagle Trail #1910 making a left again.

From here the mapped route takes you to Blue Lake, a good option for camping if breaking up this long adventure into multiple days. From Blue Lake, make your way up and over Ivan Carper Pass. This is a strenuous climb but you then descend into the beautiful lakes basin area.

Take the Lakes Basins Trail #1810 back to West Fork Wallowa River Trail #1820 completing the lollipop loops. The mapped route here takes you back to the Ice Lake Trail #1808 where you turn left up the significant climb to Ice Lake. Another opportunity to camp here, but it can be very busy on weekends. Proceed up from Ice Lake to Matterhorn and Sacajewa peaks.

At this point, pretty much all downhill back to Ice Lake Trail #1808 then another left on West Fork Wallowa River Trail #1820 to complete the route and return to the trailhead.
