Description

Devona Lookout Trail starts from a trail junction at the 4.2 mile mark of the Celestine Lake Trail. Although unmarked, go right (away from Celestine Lake) at this trail junction to hike Devona Lookout Trail. Please see the Celestine Lake Trail description for more details on accessing Devona Lookout Trail.

Devona Lookout Trail climbs a wooded ridge to expansive views of the surrounding mountains and river valleys. The trail starts off flat in the beautiful, dense mixed fir forest, complete with woodland wildflowers. At about the .8 mile mark, the trail begins climbing the ridge. From here to the end, the hillside drops off to the right (southwest, and at the very end, to the southeast and finally to the east), providing great views as the trees thin.

By the 1.2 mile mark, Devona Lookout Trail is out of the forest and almost to its high point, thus providing expansive views for the last .6 miles of the trail. The high point is reached and then the trail drops slightly as it rounds a bend to the left (northeast) at the very end. Along this section, one can see (southwest to east) the De Smet Range with the Snake Indian River valley below it, Pyramid Mountain, the Jaques Range, Athabasca River with the Maligne River and Rocky River flowing into it, Roche Miette, and more.

Flora & Fauna

Mixed fir forest. Summer woodland wildflowers - paintbrush, asters, and more. A big toad with red spots lives here (Western/Boreal Toad?).
