Description

The Butte is the easiest hike up a "mountain" you'll find in the Mat-Su valley. It's a great place to take visitors to Alaska thanks to the spectacular 360 degree view of the Knik Glacier, Matanuska Peak, Pioneer Peak, the Talkeetna Mountains, the Matanuska river, and the Mat-Su valley. This is the first of two trails up the Butte. It is also the dustier of the two trails. It is a singletrack that doesn't have many switchbacks. There are a few different routes one can take. Starting where the trail leaves the barbed wire fence, this route heads left on an easy to overlook path and follows a single switchback to bypass the more popular route which goes up a steep rocky area. It meets up again with the main trail and again diverges into a couple options, all of which lead to the summit.
