Overview
This hike combines the Organ Pipes Track, the
Zig Zag Track, the
Panorama Track, and sections of the Pinnacle Road to create a short loop around the eastern side and over the top of Mount Wellington, There are good views of Hobart from both the Organ Pipes Track and the top of Mount Wellington.
Description
The indicated start is at The Chalet parking and picnic area, but you could also start from the top of Mount Wellington where there is more parking. The Organ Pipes Track is well maintained and easy going. In the middle of the track, you'll pass the towering, columnar cliffs of dolerite, which lend the track its name. You might even see climbers and can—with a bit of scrambling over boulders—get closer to the Organ Pipes on several side routes.
The Zig Zag track is narrower and steep in places. It's the only section that merits rating this an intermediate/difficult hike. The return is primarily by the Pinnacle Road which has little shoulder but limited traffic. However, the
Panorama Track shortens the route by clipping off part of the road's hairpin turn while offering limited shade and a respite from traffic.
