Description

A dirt road takes you as far as your vehicle can go. Most AWD SUVs will need to park in a spot leaving about 3.3 miles to the saddle. Larger 4WD, high-clearance vehicles can go further and ATVs can go further still.

From the most common area to park, the trail is a smooth, wide dirt road, although with many large rocks and gulleys. Soon it becomes rock-strewn, making footing uncertain. This hike is extremely strenuous, climbing 2,500 feet in 3.3 miles with no switchbacks and very little shade.

From the saddle, if one wants to camp near a stream, it's about an 800-foot decline over one mile. There is no trail at this point and one has to bushwhack.

Beautiful scenery, evoking the opening scene of The Sound of Music.

Flora & Fauna

Elk, deer, snakes, and lots of beautiful flowers.
