Weather: The trail is largely protected by mountains except for the peak which can experience extremely windy conditions.
The trail starts at the end of a dirt road with parking for 3-4 cars. You'll rarely find anyone on the trail except the odd local so take your time.
Description
The trail is semi-informal with the lower regions maintained for fire break use and therefore the steep sections are more of a sandy incline. It is best to hike the route in the direction indicated or return via the cliff route to avoid injury for non-experienced hikers or families. It is a rather quick hike up to the beacon and can be done early morning in conjunction with the Hangklip lighthouse hike if you are staying in the area.
No water points are available along the trail but several sandstone boulders provide areas for morning breakfast/brunch.
Due to the presence of baboons (that often traverse the region to scavenge muscles in Hangklip) it is advised to hide away food in their presence. Barking will alert you of a nearby troop-do NOT approach and do NOT attempt to feed.
Flora & Fauna
Hangklip Peak is home to several unique Fynbos species that flower different times during the year. During autumn you'll pass several Fabeaceae that smell like sweet honey. The latter is characteristic of Fynbos honey and if you manage to reach Stanford, the local honey factory gives free tastings.
