Need to Know

The trail leaves from a parking area in a primitive county campground. Pit toilets near trailhead, open year round.

Description

The trail climbs moderately for about 100 yards from the parking area, then runs east along the base of sandstone cliffs. The sandstone has iron staining patterns in tiger stripes and leopard spots patterns—hence the Wildcat Mound name! After a few hundred yards along the base of the cliff, there is a short, steep climb up a slope to the upper level. From here, you can continue east through the forest, where the trail eventually loops back to the parking area, or loop back west along the top of the cliff for expansive views to the south (recommended). When the fall colors are peaking, the view is fantastic.

Flora & Fauna

Hardwood forest, spectacular fall colors in late September through early October.

Nice little hike. There are some cool outlooks. Lots of off-shoot trails, so you may do some exploring on some of the trails, accidentally. 2.1mi
