Need to Know

Bring plenty of water. There is little shade.

Description

The trail begins at a turnout along Big Tujunga Road about 1 mile east of Vogel Flat. There is a modest sign at the east end of the lot that indicates the start of the trail. It climbs up a short ways then parallels the road west for about a mile. After that it begins a long, steady climb on the south facing side of the mountain weaving in and out of side canyons. The area is recovering from the devastating Station Fire (2009) so there is very little shade. There is a seasonal spring about half way up. Watch out for the poison oak.

There are some nice views of Big Tujunga Canyon and Mt. Lukens to the south. The trail turns northwest as it contours around the south side of Fox Mountain then ascends to the east ridge of Condor Peak. It follows a large fuel break then turns north on an old road bed. Condor Peak can be reached by climbing up the steep fuel break to the top where there are impressive views in all directions on a clear day.

The trail contours around the east side of the peak and heads north to a junction with the Trail Canyon Trail #13W03. From there both trails continue to follow the road ending at Indian Ben Saddle along the Mendenhall Ridge Road #3N32.

Flora & Fauna

Most hardy chaparral species of chamise, scrub oak, ceanothus, manzanita, laurel sumac. Nice bush poppies produce bright yellow flowers in spring. Watch for rattlesnakes.
