Overview

A loose scramble up steep trail rewards with numerous viewpoints of the mountain summit, the Wilson River far below, Kings Mountain beyond, and the forested hills of Tillamook State Forest.

Description

Reaching the summit of Elk Mountain is an arduous task. Loose scree, steep grades, and narrow trails make up a majority of the trail. Appropriate traction and gear is definitely recommended. The trail climbs nearly 2,000 feet in a mile and a half, and the steepness is compounded by loose footing almost the entire way. For those brave enough to take on the challenge, this trail is one of the gems of Oregon's Coast Range.

It's unlikely you'll encounter others as you pull yourself up the ridge's path; it's not for the faint of heart. You'll surely be taking ample breaks as you climb Elk Mountain Trail; however, there are numerous viewpoints of the mountain summit, the Wilson River far below, Kings Mountain beyond, and the forested hills of Tillamook State Forest, that make for great resting points.

Once at the summit of Elk Mountain, you have the option to make this an out-and-back or continue on to loop Kings Mountain Trail or the Elk Creek Trail.
