Overview

This moderately difficult 6-mile hike is full of beautiful woodlands and scenic views. From the wildflowers covering the sun-spotted forest floor to the dense pine forest near the peak, this hike will have your head on a swivel enjoying the environment. Along with this hike, you'll also find the Pico Shelter, a small wooden hut for backpackers passing through. The peak gives 360-degree panoramic views of the region including Killington to the south and the Chittenden Reservoir to the north.

Need to Know

Pico Shelter is located at mile 2.5.

Description

The hike starts at the Sherburne Pass parking lot and begins as a gradual climb. This section is full of wildflowers covering the forest floor and a few small mountain streams.

Around mile 1.5, the climb becomes steeper and begins to switchback up the mountain. Around this elevation, the environment begins to change to more coniferous trees and mossy ground. Around mile 2.5 the Pico Shelter will appear on your right. The trail splits with the Sherburne Pass Trail continuing south and the Pico Link Trail continuing west.

The entirety of the Pico Link Trail is a steep climb to the peak of Pico Mountain. Navigate with care until you reach the second section of ski trail where you'll be able to see the ski patrol lodge and the summit lift.

Flora & Fauna

Trillium flowers and many other species of wildflowers grow here.

History & Background

The Long Trail Lodge used to be located at Sherburne Pass.
