A nice trail in the Ouachita National Forest that would be great with kids.

Description

Start at Iron Spring parking lot off of Hwy 7. From the parking lot, follow the Hunts Loop Trail (white blazes) west, immediately crossing the river. Take a left at the intersection to follow the trail clockwise. You'll immediately climb a rather steep grade that leads 500 ft. to the top of Short Mountain for a great view of the area.

The trail leads down the ridge of Short Mountain, then descends the side heading north to the Saline River Valley. At about 1.8 miles, the trail turns right and joins the Ouachita NRT: Segment 9 (blue blazes). Along this segment of trail, there will be both white and blue blazes. As you reach Hwy 7, the trail splits off from the Ouachita Trail heading south along the Middle Fork Saline River (now only following white blazes). Continue following the river to the initial junction and take a left back to Iron Springs parking lot.

Iron Spring Park notably has a small swimming hole nearby.
