Overview

A peaceful and easy-to-moderate trail with great views especially in winter and spring. Another good thing about the trail is that there is not much traffic, so it is a great option if you prefer solitude!

Description

The hike starts from the parking area located just south of Grant Lake. From the parking lot, head north on Halls Valley Trail which heads along the eastern shore of Grant Lake. After about 0.3 miles, at the junction with Bernal Trail, take a right to stay on Halls Valley Trail which heads off to the east.

At about 0.5 miles into the hike, you'll reach a junction with Los Huecos Trail which heads right, but to follow the hike as mapped, stay left on Halls Valley Trail. The trail begins to climb an easy to moderate grade as it ascends the north side of the drainage. At 2.7 miles, when Halls Valley Trail trail ends at Canada de Pala Trail, take a right and continue climbing. After about 0.3 miles, take a right onto Los Huecos Trail and you'll soon reach the highest point on this loop.

Descend Los Huecos Trail which follows the ridgeline all the way back to the junction with Halls Valley Trail. Take left onto Halls Valley Trail and once you reach the lake, another left will take you back to the parking lot.

These trail are mostly dirt singletrack and can be rather exposed. Therefore, the best time to visit is during the winter or spring months when the weather is cool. Since there is not much shade, in warmer weather its best to start early as it gets hot in mid-day—take plenty of water.

It's best to hike with a friend or a group. On our last visit there was a layer of fog surrounding the mountains and Grant Lake which presented some of the amazing views.

Flora & Fauna

Plenty of wildlife, we have seen wild boars and coyotes on these trails. Also, the oak trees on the side of the trails further enhance the beauty of this area.
