Overview

This very scenic hike starts at Mosquito Flat (elevation 10,200 ft), the highest trailhead in California. The hike is mostly through the Little Lakes Vally. In only 4 miles (one way), you get to see at least 6 lakes and one mountain pass. There are great views from the Morgan Pass.

Description

This very scenic hike starts at Mosquito Flat (elevation 10,200 ft), the highest trailhead in California. From the parking lot, start climbing on the trail. After 0.3 mile, there is sign that this area is John Muir Wilderness.

The hike is mostly through the Little Lakes Valley. After about 3 miles, the trail splits (no sign!). Take the left to climb up to Morgan Pass. From there, there are great views of several peaks. The closest peak to the pass is Mount Morgan.

After enjoying the views, descend back to the junction, and turn left at the junction to hike to beautiful Gem Lake. Be sure to take some time to enjoy the peaceful and scenic setting at Gem Lake. From there, retrace your steps back to the parking lot.
