“A nice option that allows you to hike along the golden sand of Totaranui Beach.
”
Family Friendly
Everyone enjoys a walk on the beach!
Low-tide route only.
Description
If you happen to hit Totaranui at low-tide, this route is definitely the more scenic option as it allows you to bypass the roads that head through the campground. It will require crossing the a small coastal inlet which it isn’t too wide and not very deep especially at low tide. The riverbed is a bit mucky, but it is mainly soft mud and sand so you can easily slip off your shoes and make the crossing.
Once across the water, head to your left to follow the beach around. From here it is just an easy hike on the beach. You'll pass a boat ramp, and the main campground visitor center (with restrooms and picnic tables). Keep hiking along the beach until you come to the last set of wooden stairs that lead up the beach embankment. You'll want to take these stairs up in order to connect back to the main Abel Tasman track - if you keep hiking on the beach there is a singletrack cut through at the very end of the 1km long beach, but it can be hard to spot in the trees unless you know where to look.
Flora & Fauna
Oyster catchers, pukeko, and the ever mischievous weka.
