Description

A 10.5 mile out-and-back trail through a canyon named after an early prospector who began the Lost Horse Mine operations. This route offers a variety of terrain, vegetation, and views and travels mainly through a sandy/rocky wash at the bottom of the canyon. It is isolated. Sections of this route are a road-trail that is faint and difficult to find in spots. Much of it travels through a wash where the only indicators of the route are other hikers' footprints. You may find cairns or what appear to be social trails indicating the route but use caution as these are not 'official' trail markers. Good topographical maps and compass are recommended (and/or GPS). Cell phones will not get service here. After traveling south/southeast through the canyon you'll end up in the Lost Horse Valley with a view towards Park Boulevard, with Hidden Valley to your left and Cap Rock straight ahead to the East. You cannot cross the valley without traveling through private property as there is a large section of private property reaching from the hills to your left to the hills on the right. Alternatives include returning back through the canyon or finding a route that travels around the perimeter of the private property, which is marked on topographical maps and the Nat Geo Trails Illustrated map.
