Reservations are required for campsites and huts. Torrent Bay estuary can only be crossed around 2 hours either side of low tide. Otherwise, the high-tide track (about 45 min longer) must be used. Be sure to check tide tables before departing. More information can be found on the park's
website.
Description
This section of the track leads from Anchorage Bay to Torrent Bay and then to the hut and campsite at Bark Bay. Torrent Bay can be reached from Anchorage Bay via either a high or low-tide track depending on the tides and the time of day. Be sure to check tide-tables before setting out.
This is a relatively easy hike with mild elevation gain and long sections of flat hiking on well-maintained trails. The forest is lush and dense with interesting flora and fauna and the views of the coast are spectacular. Bark Bay is a particularly wonderful place to stop and camp. The sites are incredibly well maintained and just steps from the beautiful beach.
This section can be taken as part of a multi-day hike on the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Alternatively, you can take a water taxi here from Marahau, and hike back to Marahau in one day, covering both this section and the Anchorage Bay to Marahau section of the track. Be sure to check tide tables before going as there are both low and high-tide tracks for crossing Torrent Bay.
