Description
This short track is easy and well-maintained. Hikers will travel through lowland podocarp and broadleaf forest, crossing several small creeks and drainages along the way. The trail is wide and crushed gravel making the going easy. While this particular trail won't have the expansive views of the trails in the glacial moraine, it is still very scenic in its own right. The lush setting and amazing variety of trees, ferns, and mosses is equally good scenery.
After a mile of gradual climbing, the more rugged
Alex Knob Track will branch off to the left, and the Lake Wombat Trail dips down to its end point at Wombat Lake which is a small pond. Once you have taken in the scenery, head back the way you came.
Flora & Fauna
A lovely podocarp forest with rimu, kahikatea, miro, matai and totara and a lush, dense undergrowth of shrubs, ferns and tree-ferns. A variety of birds on a quiet day, including Tui, bellbirds, and fantails. No wombats.
