Description
This trail is for those coming specifically to see the falls or looking to extend for a longer hike. Follow the light blue blazes. This area has many trails and even more (confusing) connectors so looking at the posted maps or using the
Hiking Project mobile app is essential.
The section between the west parking lot and the waterfall is nice and easy. There are two creek crossings but stepping stones make them easy.
From the waterfall, going east gets a little more difficult. The trail is narrow and is full of rocks and roots. Be prepared to slow down while you are along the Potomac. There is a steep climb up to the Stubblefield Falls Overlook, but after that it gets easier.
The path widens on the eastern side of the preserve, and you'll need to take one of the connectors or follow the
Laurel Ridge Trail to get to the
Oak Trail.
The end of the Potomac Heritage Trail dumps you out into a neighborhood. If you turn left and follow the road, it'll lead you to the Potomac Heritage Trail - Roosevelt Island to Scott's Run.
