Overview
A trail race put on by SEOTR (Southeastern Ohio Trail Runners) and race director, Michael Owen. The race features 3 distance options for all skill levels from beginners to elites - 50k, 25k, and 12k. The race also features beautiful scenery of Southeast Ohio, Strouds Run State Park, and the nearby wonderful college town of Athens, Ohio (home to Ohio University). Special awards for overall, masters, grand masters, and OU students make for a great prize line up. Race packet also includes unique and high quality gear and finisher awards (custom pint glass in 2016!).
Need to Know
Camping is available very close to the start/finish area and definitely recommended. The RD usually reserves group camping for a fraction of the normal camping cost.
Description
The race begins at Strouds Run beach parking lot and rolls through some very run-able trails for the first 15 or so miles. The first big climb of the race occurs at about mile 16 with about 300 feet of gain in that mile.
Runners then encounter a very steep decline to the Hope Dr. aid station which contains a short out-and-back, so keep in mind "what goes down will come up again." Only the best of climbers will be able to run this section after leaving the aid station as it is very steep gravel path heading up about 350 feet in 0.5 mile.
One more big climb around mile 24 with another short climb following the descent from there are all that stand between you and the finish line. It is quite relieving as you exit the trail at mile 29.5 at the park campground area and run along the park roads the rest of the way to the finish back at the beach. Overall, the race features a great course, great race direction, and great volunteers. No wonder it draws some of the very best and elite trail runners from all around!
