The trail offers a nice walk and is nearby to Fort Caroline.
Overview
The hike consists of a few inclines that make this neck of the woods special in contrast to the flat state of Florida. Experienced hikers and active individuals will have no challenge on this trail. However, this does not remove the fact that there is some level of difficulty in ascending certain sections of the trail.
Three trails are followed in this four-mile expedition:
Spanish Pond Trail,
Willie Browne Trail,
Timucuan Trail. Trees create a canopy aesthetic throughout all of the trails and offer ample shade.
Need to Know
Wear bug spray and a hat to combat the risk of insect bites.
Description
The hike in Fort Caroline was one of both refreshment and recalibration. Although in close proximity to the city, it offers a different world that is rarely seen in a normal day in Duval.
The Fort Caroline trails followed offered some level of challenge in its occasional incline. Experienced hikers and active individuals will not have a problem but nonetheless, should be aware of the slope. The inclination is what distinguishes this hike from others in the Northeast Florida region.
A fairly high manmade wooden lookout point exists near the
Timucuan Trail along a black-marked trail. This is a great opportunity for both pictures and a potential break.
History & Background
The Theodore Roosevelt Area (where the trails are located) was once owned by Willie Brown. Brown gave his land away in his will to the public after he died so that individuals could enjoy the beauty that his estate had to offer. Brown had the opportunity to sell it to developers and make a lot of money. However, he instead wanted to share the joy of nature. Willie Brown named this area after Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States who founded the U.S. National Park Service.
