Description

The western trailhead off of Pipeline Road is not well marked and is easily missed (look for a rock cairn). The trail steadily descends the north side of a ridge system that overlooks and parallels Guaje Canyon to the north, but seldom is actually located directly on the actual ridge.

The trail is a narrow foot path that traverses through the Cerro Grande (May 2000) and Las Conchas (June 2011) fire burn scars and has become moderately overgrown with thorny bushes. There was sufficient traffic/maintenance of the plant growth so that it was not too unpleasant and occasionally provided welcome shade in late June.

After about 1.4 miles, Guaje Ridge Trail crosses the Mitchell Trail that provides access to the town of Los Alamos to the south or Guaje Canyon to the north. The trail continues to descend through almost treeless terrain until it ends at the intersection of the Cabra Loop Trail (originating in Rendija Canyon in Los Alamos to the south). This trail is isolated and exposed, but affords excellent 360-degree panoramic views in many locations. Adequate sun protection and plenty of water are required. A long sleeve shirt and pants are recommended to combat the unfriendly undergrowth.
